Diary. 1881.

Diary chronicles a full year's work putting up extracts and ointments for the pharmaceutical market and offers readers a description of the workaday responsibilities of a Shaker woman to her community. Comments on poor quality of bottles and the new paper labels. Mentions some workers by name, but more often by initials. Includes recipe for Charles Bostick's linament for sore throats. President Garfield's death is noted on Sept. 19. In addition to the work of the medicine shop, other events of note in the community are mentioned (example, August 4: "hired men are haying in swamp"). Deaths are recorded as well. Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations are mentioned. Interestingly, the diary has spaces to record activities for Monday through Saturday, but no space for Sundays. Those Sunday events which are recorded are generally found in the space for the previous Saturday.
